Recently a past employee of Hanbury-Autogil got in touch to tell us some history of the business! Here’s what he said;
My first job on leaving school in 1965 was painting, greasing and packing Autogil machines in Warwick Road, Birmingham. Mr Wallis (original owner of the business) lived in Devon but his factory was in Birmingham. He used to visit occasionally. The machines were originally constructed by an outsourced firm firstly Marshall’s and after to another firm. The company also made wire stripping machines for the Post Office and the Model 48″ was then being developed. Nice to know that the old firm is still going.
I forgot to mention the ‘company song’ to the tune of All Things Bright and Beautiful’
Autogils are wonderful
we make them large and small
Autogils are wonderful
Autogils are wonderful
and Wallis makes them all!
‘Why was he born so beautiful …………….’ was another song we used to sing (NOT about me fortunately)
Happy Days (on £3 10s a week)!
Regards
Tim Griffiths
Tim tells us he stayed in engineering for many years after working with Autogil. In the 80’s he retrained to become a secondary school design teacher before retiring.
The company has come a long way since 1965 and despite the old model 5G-60G Guillotines still being in use all over the world, we have developed a new range of sheeters 600HSC2, 1000HSC2, 1500HSC2. Check it out here!
(If any other previous employees of the business have stories like this, we’d love to hear them!)
